  1. A few general notes from M.R.E.  ******
  2.  
  3. * * * MS-DOS 3.00 or above is highly recommended for StS.   Some systems may
  4.       even require it.
  5.  
  6. This is an excerpt from the .DOC file that explains how to run StS. the first
  7. time.  Please read.
  8.  
  9.         >> Sec. 1.2            RUNNING StS THE FIRST TIME

  12.              To execute StS, just type in STS at the DOS prompt like you
  13.         would any other program.  StS is not resident or special with respect
  14.         to general operation with one exception.  StS expects to find the
  15.         COMSPEC environment string defined.  In 99% of all cases MS-DOS has
  16.         already done this job for you so no action is required by the user.
  17.         In the event that StS does not find this string, it will report the
  18.         error.  If this happens, then simply add this statement to your
  19.         AUTOEXEC.BAT file.   SET COMSPEC = C:\COMMAND.COM   If you are not
  20.         running a hard disk, you should adjust the drive letter as required.
  21.  
  22.              When executed, the StS screen will appear on your display, quite
  23.         slowly, and in living black and white.  The system defaults are set to
  24.         BIOS screen writes which allow the program to operate on any type of
  25.         MS-DOS machine.  If your computer is IBM display compatible, which
  26.         most are, you will want to follow the simple procedure below to
  27.         increase the program speed.

  29.         To turn BIOS screen writing off:
  30.  
  31.         (1.) Press the <F3> function key to go into setup mode.
  32.         (2.) Press the <F1> function key to set Screen/Sort/Mouse options.
  33.         (3.) Press the <F3> function key to toggle BIOS mode off.
  34.         (4.) Press the <Esc> key when you are finished playing with the other
  35.              options.
  36.         (5.) Press the <F4> key to save the change and exit setup mode.

  41. Some things about StS and M.R.E. you will want to know:
  42.  
  43.      Stereo Shell shareware version currently supports only the PK series of
  44. file compression utilities.  We are fully aware the the PKPAK .ARC file
  45. program will not be supported in the future and have designed our program
  46. internally to be flexible with respect to changing the command structure on
  47. the file compression functions.  The registered version of StS, which will be
  48. available in a few days, will allow user control of the command strings used
  49. in the compression process.  As always, the registered version will be the
  50. first to reflect new features and changes.  This is the policy of M.R.E..

  52.      Registered users of our now discontinued ARCOM shell utility will be
  53. given full registered user status with Stereo Shell.  ARCOM users will be
  54. notified when the registered version of StS is complete and available.  We
  55. appreciate your support of ARCOM and sincerely hope that Stereo Shell
  56. represents a significant and acceptable update and change.

  58.      M.R.E. Software is currently in the process of updating our BBS system.
  59. In approximately 2 weeks we should have a new 9600-V series modem running on
  60. an 80286 computer.  In the meantime, the BBS is running at 2400 bps and will
  61. accept calls and on-line credit card registrations.
